Shareholder Designated Contributions
Introduced in the 1981 Letter, the Shareholder Designated Contributions program is a unique corporate governance policy where Berkshire Hathaway allows its owners to decide where the company's charitable donations should be directed.
🎁 The Program Details
Instead of the board or management deciding which charities receive Berkshire's funds, each shareholder is allocated a pro-rata portion of the total charitable budget to designate to a charity of their choice.
- Participation: In its inaugural year, 95.6% of eligible shares participated. By 1993, this grew to 97% participation.
- Philosophy: Buffett and Munger believe that since the money belongs to the shareholders, the choice of its final destination should also belong to them.
- Conception: The idea was originally conceived by Charlie Munger.
- Expansion: The initial allowance was $2 per share, which was consistently expanded over the years in line with Berkshire's growth, reaching $10 per share by 1993.
🏁 2003: Termination of the Program
The program was reluctantly terminated in 2003 due to intense controversy and external pressure.
- The Catalyst: Some shareholders directed their contributions to organizations involved in the abortion debate (on both sides). This led to organized boycotts and harassment targeted at The Pampered Chef's independent associates.
- The Decision: Buffett and Munger decided that they could not allow a program meant to honor shareholders to destroy the livelihoods of the thousands of people who worked for Berkshire subsidiaries.
- Legacy: The termination marked a rare instance where outside social "warfare" forced Berkshire to abandon a deeply held partnership ideal to protect its employees.
