Byron Trott
Overview
Byron Trott is a renowned investment banker, formerly a Vice Chairman of Investment Banking at Goldman Sachs, and later the founder of BDT & Company. He is uniquely famous for being one of the only investment bankers that Warren Buffett publicly praises and trusts.
Relationship with Berkshire Hathaway
Trott's relationship with Berkshire Hathaway became particularly visible in 2003, when he facilitated two major acquisitions:
- McLane Company: Bringing the Walmart-owned subsidiary to Buffett's attention.
- Clayton Homes: Assisting in the acquisition process of the manufactured housing leader.
Buffett's Endorsement
"Byron... is the rare investment banker who understands exactly what makes sense for a business and for its owner. He and Goldman Sachs were vital to our success in several transactions during 2003."
Buffett later noted that Trott earns his fees by making deals that actually make sense for the long-term owner, rather than just pushing for transactions to generate commissions.
Investment Philosophy
Trott is known for a "client-first" approach that aligns closely with Buffett's own values. He often works with family-owned businesses and emphasizes long-term capital preservation and stable ownership structures, rather than short-term financial engineering.
